Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Biology offers a major in Biology. In addition to the traditional biology curriculum, specialized concentrations in Microbiology and Resource Biology and Biodiversity are available for students wishing to specialize in those areas. The department also plays a major role in preparing students for postgraduate professional programs (i.e. Medicine and Dentistry, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Optometry, Veterinary Medicine, among others; check out the UL students' Pre-Professional Society website).
Students with an interest in the life sciences are required to complete the University and Biology Core Curriculum. However, there is sufficient latitude in the undergraduate curriculum and specialized concentrations that a student can select course electives from the zoological sciences, plant sciences, ecology, microbiology, genetics, evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, and molecular biology. These electives will be selected in consultation with the students' undergraduate advisor. In addition, students that have scored 26 or above on the ACT exams and maintain a 3.0 grade point average are eligible to participate in the Honors program. The undergraduate honor's student may conduct a research project in close association with a biology faculty member.
Students admitted to the UL Lafayette are eligible to major in Biology. Completion of the minimum requirements for high school graduation is adequate preparation to major in the life sciences. However, high school students considering a career in the life sciences are encouraged to complete four units of math and four units of science, one unit being chemistry or physics.
You can see the course listings and requirements for our majors on the degree plans on the Advising Matters page.
