Admission

Admission to the graduate program in Biology requires a grade point average of 3.0 and a satisfactory GRE score. Applicants not meeting these requirements may be admitted under extenuating circumstances, such as evidence of undergraduate research, publication of scientific papers, or outstanding letters of recommendation. Applicants are strongly urged to contact one of the faculty members in the Department of Biology to explore the possibility of performing thesis or dissertation research in that person's laboratory. Applicants to the non-thesis program should directly contact the graduate coordinator.

Graduate Stipends

Each doctoral student in the department that is making adequate academic and research progress received some financial support. Most masters students in the thesis track receive some stipend support; however such support in not guaranteed.  Students in the non-thesis track do not typically receive stipend support, but are potentially eligible for some forms of financial aid.

Stipends vary in the amount dispersed to the student and in the specific duties performed by the student. Fellowships offered by the Board of Regents (BOR) on a competitive basis in the amount of $28,000/year are awarded to doctoral students 12 months/year for a period of up to 4 years. In addition, University Fellowships are available on a competitive basis in the amount of $16,000 for two-semester academic year (10 months). The Biology Department offers a variety of teaching assistantships. Funding levels currently are $10,500 for master's students and $14,500 for doctoral students for the two-semester academic year. Students with assistantships and fellowships receive full tuition waivers and partial fee waivers. Faculty members with grants may offer Research assistantships and employ graduate students as laboratory technicians or as research assistants. Graduate student research is supported by funds from the Department of Biology, from the Graduate Student Organization, and/or from grants obtained by the student or his/her advisor. Applicants for financial assistance should submit the appropriate form to the Graduate School Office along with other application materials by February 1 to ensure full eligibility for funding in the Fall Semester. Later applications may be considered for support as funding becomes available.

Applicants for graduate study should submit the following information to the Graduate School Office: an application form, official college or university transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and official Graduate Record Examination scores. Doctoral students are also encouraged to submit scores from the Advanced Biology GRE, if they have completed that exam. In addition, a resume or CV should be emailed to the Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Biology
